Latte Macchiato

The preparation

Ingredients

  • Fresh milk (whole, skim, or any preferred type)
  • Espresso coffee beans or pre-ground espresso
  • Sweetener (optional)
  • Vanilla or caramel syrup (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Espresso

  1. Grind the Coffee: If you're using whole beans, grind them finely using a coffee grinder. You’ll need about 18-20 grams of coffee for a double shot.
  2. Brew the Espresso: Use your espresso machine or stovetop espresso maker to brew a double shot of espresso. Set it aside for a moment.

Froth the Milk

  1. Measure the Milk: Pour about 200-250 ml (about 1 cup) of milk into a milk frother or a small pitcher if using a steam wand.
  2. Froth the Milk:
    • If using a milk frother: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to heat and froth the milk.
    • If using a steam wand: Insert the steam wand just below the surface of the milk and turn it on. Move the wand around slightly to create a whirlpool effect. Froth until the milk doubles in volume and is warm to the touch (about 65°C or 150°F).

Pour the Milk

  1. Fill the Glass: Pour the frothed milk into a tall glass, leaving a little space at the top for the espresso.
  2. Layer the Milk: Let the milk settle for a few seconds. This will allow the froth to rise to the top and the milk to settle at the bottom.

Add the Espresso

  1. Prepare the Espresso: If the espresso has cooled down, reheat it slightly by placing it in a microwave-safe container and heating it for 15-20 seconds.
  2. Pour the Espresso: Slowly pour the espresso into the center of the milk froth. The espresso should sink through the froth and create a layered effect, with the milk at the bottom, the espresso in the middle, and the froth on top.

Optional Additions

  1. Sweeten: If you like your latte macchiato sweetened, add a bit of sugar or your favorite sweetener to the espresso before pouring it into the milk.
  2. Flavor: Add a splash of vanilla or caramel syrup to the milk before frothing for an extra flavor boost.

Serve and Enjoy

  1. Serve Immediately: A latte macchiato is best enjoyed immediately while it's hot and frothy.
  2. Garnish: You can garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or cinnamon on top of the froth if desired.

Tips

  • Experiment with different types of milk (almond, soy, oat) to find your preferred taste and froth consistency.
  • Practice makes perfect! Getting the perfect froth and pour takes a bit of practice, so don’t get discouraged if it’s not perfect the first time.
